Entrelac is a knitting technique used to create a textured diamond pattern.  While the result resembles basket-woven strips of knitted fabric, the actual material comprises interconnected squares on two different orientations.  In this class, students will learn the basics of entrelac and start a scarf.  Students need to know the basics of knitting. 
Students will need to bring worsted weight yarn and size 8 mm knitting needles.  Variegated yarn works well for this project.

Finishing Techniques for Knitting

Students will learn the following Finishing Techniques for Knitting.
I-Cord edges, and I cord
Three needle bind off
Mattress stitch for seams
Picking up dropped stitches; purl and knit
M1R and M1 Left
Kitchener Stitch closure.... if there is time
Reference materials, video sites and outline will be listed in this class.
Students should bring projects that are unfinished. If there are none to bring then students needs to bring at least 4 knitted swatches that we can practice with. Worsted weight yarn and size 7 or 8 needs should be used to make the swatches. Double pointed needs are required for I-Cord. Tapestry needle for tucking in tails and a small crochet hook, size D or E for picking up stitches.

Diagrams Made Easy for Crocheters

Learn how to read a pattern diagram the simple and easy way.  You will use diagrams to create a few lace or granny square samples.  Join me in the adventure of learning to crochet using a diagram.  You will go home with some very nice samples or a beginning of a scarf plus several patterns.  This class is for those that know basic crochet stitches.  All yarn furnished.  Students need to bring several sizes of hooks to use.

Design Your Own Shawl Without Charts or Math

If you are curious about how shawl shapes are created, or are ready to design your own shawl, this class is for you! We will tackle the basics of shawl geometry and construction, texture and color combining.  Participants will learn the components of the top-down triangle, 3 and 4 section shawls, asymmetrical triangle and crescent shawl, focusing on personal design and creating the size and features that you prefer.  Class covers several shawl-starting methods, including garter tab, 3 stitch cast-on, and provisional cast on; creating texture with knit and purl patterns; color work and striping/gradation.  We'll also cover some easy lace, picot and other edgins.  Wtih only 2 decisions to make before you start a shawl, this class shows you how to create a unique, personal shawl as you knit.
Participant skill level: easy, should know cast on, knit, purl, basic increase/decrease.

Please bring 2-3 colors of contrasting fingering weight yarn, size 5 double point or straight needles, size 5 and 6 24" circular needles; stitch markers and small notion bag with the usual tools.

Double knitting is a fun technique that produces a two color, double layered fabric with reversible design. Make a set of coasters or a sturdy dish rag if you are a beginner
to this technique. Bold knitters can venture into a diagram to create a scarf with an image or pattern and learn techniques to finesse your work.

Students bring Worsted weight yarn in 2 contrasting colors.
Straight or circular needles in size appropriate for yarn.
Basic knitting supplies: Scissors, tapestry needle, measuring tape

Crocheted Socks

Learning to crochet socks is a whole lot of fun. You don't need a whole lot of supplies and the best part is that it's a portable project. You can crochet socks almost anywhere. Socks can be intimidating at first but they are not hard. Each step will be explained in detail and I will be there to help throughout the process until you feel comfortable. We will also be creating a foot template for you to help with that perfect fit. Handouts and yarn will be provided. Students must know basic stitches. You will take home a sock for a sample. Student to bring a size D and E hook, and pencil or pen.

Introduction to Natural Dyes

Come learn the art and history of fabric dyeing using light fast and color fast natural dyes.  Over 15 historic as well as native dyes will be utilized in class including cochineal, logwood and osage orange.  This class is suitable for all levels of skill, including beginners.  Each student will take home a notebook of recipes and yarn samples, but is encouraged to bring small samples of their own fiber medium to drop into the dye pot.  Students should wear old clothes and/or a dye apron.

Embroider Your Knitting

Join us for an introduction to using embroidery stitches to embellish your knitting.  I will guide you through duplicate stitch (handy for fixing or replicating intarsia), a variety of "straight" stitches, chained stitches, French Knot and other decorative stitches.  No sewing or knitting experience necessary.  Bring a variety of DK and worsted yarn ( a few yards of several colors) a swatch of stockinette stitch with a garter stitch border. Thrift finds or old knit swatches are fine.  (Mine is a purchased sweater.)  The yarns and swatch should be approximately the same weight and material content.  Please bring a tapestry needle and basic knit/sew supplies (scissors, etc).

Continuous Strand Weaving on a Frame Loom

Learn this magical technique for creating triangles, squares or rectangles of woven fabric that can be joined together to make shawls, scarves, pouches, rugs, pillows, etc. Bex’s mother wrote THE book on this method! No measuring, warping, or math needed for this class. Finish a complete project in 3 hours! Try our popular Washcloth Loom, Weave a triangle and a square on our 6” Mini Mod Looms that can be combined for amulet bags, or try a cell phone bag on our smallest Rectangle Loom. This is a great way to learn more about continuous strand weaving with no initial investment in the loom or equipment. Materials fee includes use of looms and tools, basic materials, written handout and instruction. Students who purchase their loom will receive a $10 discount at time of purchase.

Zoom Loom Weaving

How to use the weaving needle specific to Pin Looms
Discussion of various styles of Pin Looms available in today’s market.
Web sites, reference books and guides will be outlined.
Students should bring 3 – 4 small balls of varied weight yarn to warp
the loom to practice. Worsted, DK work well. Each ball needs to be at
least 10 yds in length. All items to use with the loom are included in the
loom kit.

If student already owns a Zoom Loom kit the fee will be reduced to $5.00 supply fee and the regular teaching fee will be applied.

This is a fun class with some innovative ideas for starting and finishing your knitted projects, including shawls, hats, mitts, scarves and more!  Jennifer will teach and show several cast-on techniques including picot cast on, decorative additions cast-on with flowers, beads, appliques and more, two color long tail cast-on (with variations) and I-cord cast on.  We'll also learn pictot bind-off, color work bind off, and several variations of stretchy or firm bind-offs.  This class will assist you to answer the question: how do i make the cast-on & bind-off match? Bonus topic, the easiest way to place beads in your knitting!

Participants should know long-tail cast on.

Please bring lighter-colored worsted weight yarn; fingering weight solid or tonal yarn (partial balls are fine); needles in various sizes (4,5,6,7,8), both straight or double points & circulars, notions bag with usual tools.

Fair Isle Hat Knitting

Students will learn the Scandinavian technique of stranded knitting; that is knitting with two colors to create designs and pictures.  In this class students will make a hat.  Students need to know basic knitting skills, such as knit, purl, increase, decrease and knitting in the round.  

Students need to bring 2 skeins of worsted weight yarn in contrasting shades or colors.   (1 dark and 1 light), 16" circular size 8 needles and dpns size 8/5mm needles, stitch marker, darning needle and scissors.

Learn how to weave a beautiful rag rug or place mats without the expense of buying a loom.  Twining is an ancient craft that has been done basically the same way throughout time.  I will show you how to use up those leftover scraps of material or yarn from prior projects, worn out jeans, or even a bed sheet that somehow got a hole in it.  After completing this class project you will have a sample that can be used as a hot pad to adorn your table.  The twining frame is yours to keep.  All materials will be furnished, including handouts.

Most Amercians learn to knit English style (carrying working yarn in the right hand), but ribbing, colorwork and knitting in general can be much easier when you carry your yarn in your left hand.  Learn and practice how to comfortably hold your yarn and "pick" your stitches the right way to continental knit.  You may never "throw" your yarn again.

Students should bring worsted weight yarn.

Interested in indigo, but believe that it is "too complicated"?  In this class we will demystify the indigo bath.  Students will learn the history of indigo, a little of its chemistry, how to prepare a stock solution and dye bath and how various fibers take the dye.  Students of all levels, beginner to advanced, are welcome.  Each student will take home a notebook with samples and bandanna dyed in class.

Whether you knit or crochet, the process for getting the right fit in a garment is the same.  We will start with a basic pattern and determine the right size to follow by taking personal measurements, making and reading a swatch and adjusting needles and hooks for a perfect fit.

Spot Me Now Scarf

In this quick make & take, you will make a silk scarf with a sprinkle method.  The way the dyes combine and mix is always a festive treat.  You will take a wet scarf with you and rinse it later to see the results.  We will be outside and dye flying so dress accordingly.  You will need a mask, preferably disposable and rubber gloves. 

Instructor provides scarves, dyes and tools.
