Avenues to College Application

Avenues to College equips young people transitioning out of foster care with the tools to successfully complete college.
 
Students selected for the 2019-20 Cohort will participate in an extended leadership development training during summer 2018. Students who successfully complete the leadership development training will begin classes at PCC Fall 2018; have access to an apartment with College Housing Northwest; monthly financial assistance towards cost of living; and intensive academic, financial and independent living coaching.
 
You are eligible to apply for the leadership development training cohort and have access to college and housing support if you:
  • Attended at least one meeting or workshop with Avenues to College during the 2018-19 school year
  • Currently live within the city of Portland (or family of origin has Portland address)
  • Are eligible for and planning to attend Portland Community College in Fall 2019
  • Would like support with the transition from foster care to independence
This application has five sections:
  1. Contact and High School Information
  2. Demographic Information
  3. Personal Essays (two essays, up to 500 words each)
    • ESSAY 1: Nationally only 3 percent of students who have experienced foster care will graduate from college. What change would need to happen in the foster care system (or the education system) that would increase the number of students in care graduating from college?
    • ESSAY 2: How do you want to use your college education to better the future for yourself or your community?
