Galena Park Police Departmentgppd.usSworn Officers | DispatchThe City of Galena Park is located on the north bank of the Houston Ship Channel, formerly Buffalo Bayou, bordering Houston. The first settler in the area was Ezekiel Thomas of SC. In 1833, Issac Batterson and his family settled near here. Batterson later purchased 1000 acres from Thomas, located in the center of present day Galena Park. For almost 100 years, the settlement was known as "Clinton", until 1928 when the U.S Postal Service refused to grant the town a post office, due to the fact that a post office in Texas bearing the name Clinton already existed. Subsequently, the name of the town was changed to Galena Park, after the Galena-Signal Oil Company, then the town's leading employer. Galena Park's contribution to Texas' Fight for Independence occurred on April 19th, 1836. General Sam Houston took flooring planks from the Batterson’s house to build rafts with which to ferry his army across Buffalo Bayou, while some 250 soldiers remained in camp near the Batterson homestead. Houston’s Army crossed the bayou, fought and defeated the Mexican Army under General Santa Anna in the Battle of San Jacinto, winning independence for Texas. The City of Galena Park has prospered since its incorporation in 1935, growing in population from 1,500 to 10,592. It is six square miles bordered by the cities of Houston and Pasadena, and the Houston Ship Channel.
