Aiken Department of Public Safetywww.cityofaikensc.govSworn OfficersPrior to 1970, the City of Aiken was served by the traditional roles of the Aiken Fire Department and the Aiken Police Department. However, the City of Aiken decided to merge the roles of fire and police chiefs, and on July 1, 1970 appointed J. Carrol Busbee as the first Director of Public Safety in the City of Aiken. He immediately began preparing the two Departments to become one of the first fully-integrated Public Safety Departments in the country. Between the years of 1970 and 1977, the Department merged records and cross trained all personnel in both police and fire duties. The total Public Safety concept was completed in 1977 when the Aiken Department of Public Safety started its operations at midnight on July 1st. The Department currently is responsible for not only police and fire duties, but serves as medical first responders as well. The Department maintains a traditional organizational structure, with the services of a true cross trained public safety agency. Organizational components include the divisions of Patrol/Fire Suppression, Administration/Support Services, Investigations, and Community Services.
